Academic Support

Most of our full-time students decide to join our Academic Support Programme (ASP) which is managed by the Director of Studies.   On the ASP an individual programme of academic support is provided by your Personal Tutor whose overall responsibility is to:

  • Provide strategic guidance and direction for your studies
  • Ensure effective integration of the components that make up your academic programme
  • Develop your organisational and independent study skills
  • Monitor your progress
  • Support your general welfare

The application process includes an interview with the Director of Studies who may also take up academic references and ask you to complete an assessment in your chosen subjects.  This will determine the degree of support that you need and the corresponding fee.

The ASP includes the following services:

  • A designated Personal Tutor to assist in the planning and implementation of your academic programme
  • An overall academic plan establishing achievable goals and a strategy to meet them
  • Study plans for each subject
  • A written report after each tutorial – giving grades for achievement and effort
  • Support to help you meet the administrative requirements of your academic programme (timetabling, independent study, examination entries, etc.)
  • Selection and management of your tutors
  • Daily management of, and response to, tutorial reports
  • Weekly meetings with your Personal Tutor
  • Monthly testing to monitor your progress against the academic plan and the subject-specific study plans
  • Use of the Greene’s Study Centre
  • Supervised independent study sessions

Is the Academic Support Programme right for you?

Answer these questions to help you to decide.  If you answer ‘no’ to any of the questions below, you may need the extra support provided by our ASP.

  • Do you currently have academic support from somewhere else such as school or an advisor?
  • Are you well organised?
  • Can you manage your own timetable?
  • Can you plan your studies by yourself?
  • Are you good at independent study?
  • Can you effectively monitor your progress through regular self-testing?
  • Are you highly motivated in your studying?
  • Do you have a strategy for university entrance?

As an Oxford student, the tutorials I received from my College tutors were, undoubtedly, the most exciting and intellectually stimulating part of my academic life. They not only helped me engage more closely with the material but also develop an understanding with my tutors where we both adapted and learnt from each others’ respective styles. Seeing my own students now pursuing a path of learning and intellectual development has certainly been the most uplifting part of my teaching experience.
