In my experience as a student, and now as a tutor, the tutorial system offers an opportunity to fully engage with each student’s particular interests and learning style – and this gives students the chance to really fulfil their potential. Tutorials allow for the exploration of a topic in the kind of depth that is simply not possible in a classroom or group teaching.

The Oxford tutorial method is one of the most distinctive and recognized in the world, as it gives students ample amounts of opportunity to explore their own ideas and discuss them freely without any hesitation with their tutors.  And for a passionate teacher like me, this is the best possible way to serve students and in turn society.

I have always enjoyed teaching and passing on my knowledge to others. Using tutorials allows for teaching to be tailored to one particular student thereby letting them learn in the most focused way possible. And I have seen them grow and develop over time, many of them going on to study at Oxford and other top universities.

The tutorial method adopted by Greene’s is fantastic since it gives the tutor a chance to engage with the student on a personal level – something which can be hard to achieve with a larger class. The tutorial method really does allow for extremely rapid improvement; it is so satisfying to see someone suddenly grasp a concept with which they have previously struggled, or to watch them get excited and passionate about the subject as their knowledge of it broadens.

I am enthusiastic about teaching, and particularly the tutorial method, because I think it allows for one-on-one interaction and attention to a student’s own individual needs, developing strengths and improving weaknesses, allowing a student to become more independent and responsible for learning at their greatest potential.

A good teaching method is one that is inspiring, so that what your student takes home is not just knowledge but a mind that will seek out more knowledge.
