Clearing and results day 2017: prepare your university back-up plan this summer

Even if you feel confident, it does not harm to have a back-up plan. Here are four simple things you should do this summer:

  1. Research universities and courses you are interested in with entry requirements below your insurance offer – you can use the UCAS search function to do so;

  2. Make a list of your top 5 course choices at your preferred university choices. Remember to research similar courses to your chosen course. Some universities may not have places left on the specific course you are interested in but they may still have places on similar courses;

  3. Prepare what you will say to the admissions officers on the day – why you would like to go to that particular university and what attracts you to the course. Remember to ask about the availability of student accommodation; and

  4. You may find The Telegraph/UCAS Clearing App that is available from The Telegraph useful.  It’s free to download and enables you to search for live course vacancies at hundreds of universities – make sure to do this ahead of clearing.
