The BMAT (the BioMedical Admissions Test) is used by many universities to screen candidates applying for Medicine and health-related courses. It is designed to test candidate’s skills in areas such as the application of scientific and mathematical knowledge, as well as problem solving, critical thinking and written communication.
The BMAT is a standardising test, allowing universities to compare a wide variety of candidates from different educational backgrounds, using a uniform measure. It helps decide which candidates have the qualities best suited to their career, and is used in conjunction with the UCAS application and academic qualifications. It is important to check when you should sit the test, as universities are not uniform in accepting the examination session for which they will accept results. Whichever session is accepted by the institutions to which you are applying, the test can only be taken once in the admissions cycle.
Why prepare for the BMAT?
The BMAT tests a mixture of aptitude, core knowledge and generic skills, which are a requisite for university-level study of Biomedical Sciences. These are not uniformly tested at A level or I.B., nor in the format presented in BMAT, so while prolonged coaching may not necessarily be advantageous, you should allocate a number of hours to preparation before you take the test.
Candidates tend not to have equal skills in all areas of the test, nor may they be acquainted with the kind of examination techniques and time management which the test demands. However academically capable you are, and whatever your predicted grades, being familiar with the format and content of the test, and learning to cope with the pressures of time and question styles, require practice and thought.
Why take the Greene’s course?
There are numerous self-help books and practice tests available, however the purpose of the Greene’s course is to provide an intensive day’s introduction to the structure and content of the BMAT. It enables you, with the guidance of a tutor, quickly to become familiar with question types and approaches, and to think about planning your own future preparation and revision.
You will be given plenty of practice questions during the day, and we demonstrate a systematic approach to the different sections and related questions, so you can go into your test feeling prepared and positive. However, while our course helps to give impetus and structure, it must be stressed that, to ensure you optimise your chances of success, you will need to allow yourself lots of self-administered practice.
The Greene’s course looks at each of the main three sections of the test in turn:
Section 1 Aptitude and Skills: this comprises problem solving; understanding arguments; data analysis & inference. Specifically:
Problem solving requires you to work on numerical and algebraic problems including recognising relevant information and analogous ones;
Understanding Arguments requires you to analyse test and identify any reasons assumptions and conclusions presented within, identify flaws in the argument and draw conclusions from it.
Data analysis and inference tests your information skills (including vocabulary and statistics) as well as your ability to interpret and analyse data and scientifically infer and deduce conclusions from it. Information may be in graphical, tabulated or textual forms.
Section 2 Scientific Knowledge and Applications: the knowledge assumed is set out on the BMAT website. However, you will be required to show an appropriately advanced level of understanding in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
Section 3 Writing Task: tasks will include brief questions on general, medical or scientific topics. Questions may require candidates to explain or discuss the given proposition’s implications; suggest a counter proposition or argument; suggest a (method for) resolution.
The teaching of each section will include examples of questions and how best to apply a methodical approach. You will be provided with practice questions to work through, either independently or as part of a small group, which we will then review together with you to ensure understanding – and to help you identify the topics that you need to revise.
What are the arrangements?
The Greene’s course tutors are experienced academics, subject specialists in each section of the test. The course is led by Dr. Saif Bham, D.Phil. (Oxon.), B.Sc. (Manchester). Dr. Bham is the college’s Senior Scientist, with a first class honours degree in Biochemistry, and a doctorate in Medical Oncology from the University of Oxford.
