Starting salary:£25-£30K subject to experience.

Background:

Greene’s is working in partnership with Kingsley School at Bideford in Devon and KSI Education to create the Earth Centre.

About the Earth Centre and the Ecology Zone:

At the Earth Centre everything students do and study is focused on environmental sustainability and climate change. Studying at the Earth Centre involves a focus on “learning by doing” with work experience, practical and field work at the core of each students’ studies.

Students spend considerable time on assignment at the Earth Centre’s unique Ecology Zone completing practical assignments and participating in the day-to-day operations of managing soils and growing crops using the latest ecological techniques and understanding. All horticulture production will only use no-dig techniques as sequestration of soil carbon is an important objective of the project.

The Ecology Zone is a field station and agricultural research centre that is attached to the Earth Centre. It is based on the school campus and also operates as a commercial horticultural enterprise – using no-dig growing techniques – supplying fresh organic produce to the school and local community.

The Ecology centre provides an almost infinite number of opportunities for students to learn practical skills in both scientific investigation and in running a successful horticultural enterprise. It is where many students will complete the project and practical work required for their BTEC and the EPQ A level qualifications.

About the role:

The Head of the Ecology Zone is expected to take charge of both horticultural & biomass production and assisting Earth Centre students with the field and practical elements of their assignments. This can involve a range of scientific study (soil ecology and science, plant ecology and science, etc.), practical experience (crop planning, building fertile soils, growing healthy crops, marketing and selling produce, etc.) and general support with practical planning, design and investigative skills (sampling, microscopy, species recognition, data handling, etc.).

This is a new project and the Head of the Ecology Zone, working closely with senior staff at Kingsley, will demonstrate a proactive, ‘can do’ approach and fit well into a demanding environment where there may well be changes in the emphasis of duties over time. A flexible attitude towards tasks & working hours to meet the demands of a horticultural enterprise is required.

Extensive training and support from Greene’s Education will be provided with regard to the technical and scientific aspects of the job.

General responsibilities:

  • Management of a commercial horticultural operation using no-dig techniques

  • Proven build-up of long-term soil carbon

  • Provision of fresh vegetables to Kingsley School

  • Working with students to complete practical academic assignments and work experience

  • Building up local community awareness and involvement

  • Building relations with local organisations
